Activists meet with the TCEQ

On December 11, 2017 we were invited, along with other activists, to meet with the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality (TCEQ) at their Texas Headquarters.

The discussed topics related to Harvey, such as the flash flooding, toxic waste spills, the dumpsite in the community in Port Arthur TX and surrounding areas and what should be done to prevent this from happening again we also discussed ideas to get the emissions from the oil refinery reduced and how our city leaders can play a bigger role in our efforts to protect the citizens.

Activists made great recommendations to TCEQ for improved communication with local officials and the public.

The lessons learned from the events caused by Harvey, are that disaster planning and preparedness is crucial. Transparent communication, finding ways to best protect public health and best practice sharing will go a long way to avoid similar problems in the future.
